Annual Radio & AIS Surveys

  • Passenger vessels: a renewal survey once every 12 months
  • Cargo vessels: a renewal survey at intervals specified by the Administration but not exceeding five years
LRIT reporting function*

This regulation shall apply to the following types of ships engaged on international voyages:
- passenger ships, including high-speed passenger craft;
- cargo ships, including high-speed craft, of 300 gross tonnage* and upwards; and
- mobile offshore drilling units.

Ships, irrespective of the date of construction, fitted with an AIS and operated exclusively within sea area A1, shall not be required to comply with the provisions of this regulation.

LRIT guidance

  • LRIT functionality via Inmarsat: Inm-C, mini-C or IsatM2M
  • LRIT functionality in Sea Areas:
    • Sea Area A1+A2+A3 via INM-C or Iridium.
    • Sea Area A4 via Iridium.
  • A valid LRIT Conformance Test Report (CTR) to be available on board

SSAS -Ship Security Alert System

All ships shall be provided with a ship security alert system, as follows:

  • ships constructed on or after 1 July 2004;
  • passenger ships, including high-speed passenger craft, constructed before 1 July 2004, not later than the first survey of the radio installation after 1 July 2004;
  • oil tankers, chemical tankers, gas carriers, bulk carriers and cargo high speed craft of 500 gross tonnage and upwards constructed before 1 July 2004, not later than the first survey of the radio installation after 1 July 2004; and
  • other cargo ships of 500 gross tonnage and upward and mobile offshore drilling units constructed before 1 July 2004, not later than the first survey of the radio installation after 1 July 2006.
