Network Fundamentals
Starting with the basics for Marine Electrical Engineers.
As modern vessels become increasingly connected and automated, understanding network infrastructure is no longer optional—it's essential.
This online training is designed specifically for electrical engineers in the marine industry, covering core networking concepts such as IP addressing, VLANs, routing, switching, and diagnostics with a focus on shipboard systems.
By the end of this course, you will:
• Understand the basic building blocks of networks
• Know how devices find each other and communicate
• Be able to connect and service devices on a network
• Recognize common network problems and know how to solve them
The second part of this training covers Advanced Networking & Troubleshooting for Marine Electrical Engineers.
This advanced course equips marine electrical engineers with the skills to design, segment, and troubleshoot complex shipboard networks. Key topics include:
• Subnetting & Subnet Masks: Deep dive into CIDR, VLSM, and IP planning for vessel systems
• VLANs & Logical Segmentation: Isolate systems like navigation, automation, and crew networks
• Layer 2 & Layer 3 Networking: Understand frames, packets, switching, routing, and ARP
• Routing & Gateways: Configure and troubleshoot static/dynamic routes and default gateways
• Advanced Troubleshooting: Use tools like Wireshark, SNMP, and switch diagnostics to resolve faults
• Marine Context Focus: Address EMI, redundancy, fault isolation, and real-world vessel challenges
Ideal for ETOs and marine engineers seeking advanced competency in network servicing and reliability.
This online training is a generic training, followed by the online training Field buses and NMEA0183 over IP.
